What are Mouth Ulcers or Canker Sores And How Did I Get One?
Mouth Ulcers and Canker Sores can be extremely painful and difficult to heal. These sores usually begin as a red, ulcerated spot with a yellowish border. The ulcer then becomes covered by a yellowish mixture of fluids, bacteria, and white blood cells. The development of the sore may be proceeded by a burning or tingling sensation. The sores can appear on the tongue, lips, gums, or the insides of the cheeks.
Canker sores range in size from as small as a pinhead to as large as a quarter. They appear suddenly and often leave suddenly, usually lasting from four to twenty days. Canker sores appear most often in females and some authorities believe they are contagious. They can be triggered by a number of factors including poor dental hygiene, irritation from dental work, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, stress, and fatigue. They may also result from an abnormal immune response to normal bacteria in the mouth. Stress and allergies are the most common cause of open sores in the mouth
What Natural Remedies Are Available?
As a part of our USDA sponsored research relating to goldenseal, and involving cooperators from seven universities, we did extensive literature studies concerning traditional uses for goldenseal as well as current medical research. Several articles reported results that support goldenseal's potential effectiveness against Mouth Ulcers and Canker Sores*. The beneficial properties of goldenseal for these problems were known to the Native Americans and early settlers for centuries. We also found that modern research has demonstrated that goldenseal effectively inhibits a wide range of microorganisms including Staph., Strep., and Candida. Physicians usually prescribe mouthwashes and ointments which contain tetracycline for mouth ulcers and canker sores. However many bacteria have become resistant to this antibiotic and often fungal overgrowths such as Candida albicans (yeast) occur after antibiotic usage leading, in some instances to a case of oral thrush.
Fortunately there is a completely natural remedy for mouth ulcers and canker sores. How Quick Does It Work and How Do I Use Goldenseal?
Many of our customers report that goldenseal provided relief from pain in a few hours time and total healing of the ulcer within a day or two without resorting to synthetic chemicals or antibiotics.
Traditionally powdered goldenseal was applied directly to the site of the sore however we have found the liquid extract to be the most convenient and easy to use. Simply apply the liquid extract to the affected area as needed with a cotton swab.

Goldenseal is considered safe for short-term use in adults at recommended dosages. Rare side effects may include nausea and vomiting.

There is little information about the safety of high dosages or the long-term use of goldenseal.

Goldenseal may cause changes in the way the body processes drugs, and could potentially alter the effects of many drugs.

Other herbs containing berberine, including Chinese goldthread (Coptis trifolia) and Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium), are sometimes substituted for goldenseal. These herbs may have different effects, side effects, and drug interactions than goldenseal.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid using goldenseal. Berberine, a chemical in goldenseal, can cause or worsen jaundice in newborns and could lead to a life-threatening problem called kernicterus.

Practical Tips To Help Avoid Mouth Ulcers & Canker Sores*

Eat plenty of salad with raw onions. Onions contain sulfur and have healing properties.

Include in the diet yogurt and other soured products, such as kefir, cottage cheese & buttermilk.

Avoid sugar, citrus fruits, and processed and refined foods.

Do not eat fish or meat of any kind for two weeks. The consumption of animal protein increases the body's acidity, which slows healing.

Avoid chewing gum, lozenges, commercial mouthwashes, tobacco, coffee, citrus fruits, and any other foods that you know trigger these sores.

If you have repeated attacks of canker sores, check for nutritional deficiencies.
